This section covers some of the sets I’ve used over the past few years. There are more systems out there, however, so keep an open mind and try out a new set if you come across it.

Vex Robotics Design System (Vexrobotics.com)

The most obvious inheritor to Erector for king of the metal building set is Vex, manufactured by Innovation First, an Austin, Texas company that also creates Hexbug robotic toys. Vex (see Figure 8.7) consists of a variety of aluminum beams, with connectors, wheels, motors, and microcontrollers.
